‘Swine’d world…

Text

The spread of H1N1 is uncontrollable now. It has been detected in almost every major country in the world and the Indian Health Minister declared today that in two years from now about one-third of the Indian population would have caught swine flu. He also said that no government measure can now possibly contain the spread of this disease and that people have to grow some self awareness and be vigilant. This is probably the first time in decades that a curable influenza has spread such panic amongst humans. As the number of deaths increase every day, people tend to be more afraid about it and throng the hospitals. Why does the common man wait till something kills him before he can run to find the cure for it ? There could be a lot of reasons. Lack of awareness is the safest way to explain it. But I think there is a lot more to it than being ignorant.

People are crazy enough to ignore the common cold and cough because they are curable, unless they get worse like in swine flu’s case. Many can’t afford medication at initial stages where there is a chance you’d come out clean after all the money you spent. After all for some money is really precious as they save it rupee by rupee each day. Many people, especially in India, go by the word-of-mouth in the common decisions they make. And the ignorance probably spreads faster than awareness. Also, there are not many hospitals right now tending to the victims, a couple in each city is just not enough. I believe most don’t even know the symptoms of the flu yet, though in the urban community there are emails and ads being shown everywhere possible.

I kinda realized its importance myself when a death of a 4yr old boy, due to H1N1, was reported from within a mile of where I stay in Chennai yesterday. Now I am being advised against travelling, which I do a lot, in trains as the spread is supposedly more in public places. I can sit back and lock myself down to be healthy, or go out and be a little careful. I chose to do the second and am travelling again. This applies to all of those who are afraid of the flu, they just need to step out, be normal and just a little alert than usual. Forget the fear.

Replacements

Text

Its a pity Schumacher couldn’t make it to the racing track after a much hyped and unbelievable received comeback to the Formula One season. His bike accident did cause some lasting damage didn’t it ? All this apart, Massa had a really unfortunate accident which, despite him being the one I liked lesser amongst the two Ferrari teammates, was really heartbreaking because Ferrari was just catching up with Button’s fierce winning streak with Brawn. It somehow would have got back the interest of a lot of Ferrari fans in the stands waiting for the red car to whiz past the chequered flag before everyone else. Schumi’s stunning comeback, however did do some good to the crumbling enthusiasm in my mind. Now I can’t wait to see his replacement Boeder come and take Massa’s car and show that he can finally win. It was now or never for Schumi and it didn’t work out for the 40 yr old king of motoracing. Guess its not a good year for the ‘Michaels’ after all !

weekend

Text

Saturday afternoon….after a long walk to find a place to have lunch, sweating under the sun, cursing the gods for dropping us at this place, eating vegetarian food which tasted more like it was for diabetics, we take a silent walk back, watching a street fight on the way, people coming out of a horse race cursing their bad luck, buses tilted to the left with the weight of all those youngsters hanging from it, jumping over the countless puddles of rainwater from the last three nights of heavy rain….we return home only to know that we donno what to do next. The ultimate answer to everything, as my friend bolero puts it, a novel in hand with music playing in the background. So here I am, playing ‘Pink Floyd’ on my iTunes and reading ‘The Perfect Store’, the story of eBay…..a pleasant weekend….hopefully.

Pakao

Text

They weren’t the best two years. They weren’t the worst two either….the time I spent in Chennai was, I should say, decent paced, busy but a lot disorganized so far. Staying back all night at office, coming home at odd hours, travelling on weekends, eating out all through the day…all this kinda gets onto you after a time. For me, though, a little more patient as I am, it took two years. So now is the time to go searching for some change in life….

After realising that the smallest of changes could bring back some interest in the way I live in this city, I decided to start with a small scale kitchen at home. Of course, the first option was broadband, which is something I got after a long torture by the service provider. But now that I come home and work in the night, there is nothing to eat. So the idea of the kitchen, to start small is to help me make a snack or a meal when I need one desperately. :) Khud pakao, khud khao !

Talk your way thru…

Text

It probably is a common thing seen at all workplaces. But I did notice it in closeup view today in mine, that when someone is totally screwed up….so much that he is scared to death….he can still get away with just what you call ‘vakchaturyam’ (the skill of speaking intelligently - in telugu). All you need to do is put up a bright face in the face of the gravest of dangers and speak with the confidence of the CEO and people will promptly mould to your path of discussion….and lo…you, the should-be-victim is now guiding the whole conversation at will :) No, I am not talking of myself….how I wish I had that skill….sadly enough, I am a workaholic who reasons about everything in life and at work, not so good ain’t it ?
